What Is Sustainable Wedding Catering — and Is It Worth It?

The short answer

Sustainable wedding catering means your food is sourced, served and cleaned up in a way that wastes less and harms less. In practice, that looks like fresh, local ingredients, meats raised without added hormones, compostable plates and napkins, and a plan for what happens to the scraps and cooking oil after the last dance. And yes, it's worth it: done well, a green menu tastes better, looks beautiful on the table, and many of the practices behind it come standard with us. At Something Classic, a woman-owned caterer in Charlotte, North Carolina, we've been creating Queen City weddings for over 35 years, and sustainability has been part of how we work for a long time. Here's what it actually looks like.

What a green wedding menu looks like, from garden to plate

Sustainability isn't one thing you add at the end. It shows up at every step, from where the herbs grow to where the leftovers go.

It starts in our own garden. We grow our own herbs, floral garnishes and specialty vegetables. The basil on your caprese skewers and the edible flowers on your salads may have been picked that week, not shipped across the country. Read more about our garden in Celebrating the Joy of Tomatoes.

We keep our own honey bees. Our bees help pollinate the garden, and they're a reminder that good food depends on a healthy environment.

Better meats. We serve hormone-free meats. That's better for the animals and the land, and many guests can taste the difference.

Nothing ends up as throwaway plastic. We use compostable paper products, so the plates, cups and napkins from your cocktail hour can break down instead of sitting in a landfill. We bring the same thinking to our boxed lunches.

We clean up responsibly. We compost food scraps and recycle our cooking oil. It's the least glamorous part of a wedding, and one of the most important.

Plant-based options that shine. Our vegan recipes come from Fern, the vegan restaurant in our Mother Earth Group family. A plant-based plate from us is a centerpiece dish, not an afterthought.

This work has earned Something Classic recognition as an award-winning green company. But the real proof is on the plate.

Is sustainable catering worth it?

For most couples, yes. Here's why.

  1. It tastes better. Herbs cut that week and vegetables grown close to home simply have more flavor. Freshness is the easiest upgrade on any menu. You can actually taste the quality of freshly roasted meats instead of frozen pre-cooked products.

  2. It looks beautiful and bountiful. Garden flowers and fresh garnishes photograph wonderfully, and they make even simple dishes feel special.

  3. Your guests notice. More and more wedding guests care where their food comes from. A green menu gives them something to talk about, and gives you a story to share.

  4. It matches your values. Your wedding is one of the biggest gatherings you'll ever host. Choosing a caterer who composts, recycles and avoids throwaway plastic means your celebration leaves a lighter footprint.

  5. Many green practices are included. Our compostable plates and napkins, hormone-free meats, and composting are part of every event at no extra charge. Organic and locally grown ingredients do carry premium pricing, and we'll walk you through those choices so you can decide where to splurge. How to tell if a caterer is really green

Lots of caterers say "farm to table." A few specific questions will show you who means it:

  • Where do your ingredients come from? Look for named sources, such as their own garden or local farms, not just "we buy fresh."

  • Are your meats hormone-free? A clear yes is a good sign.

  • What are your plates, cups and napkins made of? Compostable is the answer you want.

  • What happens to the food scraps and cooking oil? A green caterer has a plan: composting and oil recycling.

  • Can you show me a vegan or vegetarian dish you're proud of? A caterer who takes plant-based food seriously usually takes sustainability seriously too. Something Classic has a lot of experience in the vegetarian and vegan world as we ran a vegan restaurant and vegan practices for fifteen years here in Charlotte with our former restaurant Fern.

  • Has your company been recognized for its green practices? Awards and certifications are an easy way to separate real commitment from marketing talk. Something Classic produced the largest compostable event in Charlotte: the Democratic National Convention opening party, for 15,000 guests. We have also won a National Stevie Award and Charlotte Business Journal Green Award for our Green Goddess Alliance practices.

If a caterer answers these quickly and with specifics, you're in good hands. For the full list of questions to ask, see How to Select a Wedding Caterer.

Frequently asked questions

Who offers sustainable wedding catering in Charlotte, NC? Something Classic is an award-winning green caterer in Charlotte. We grow our own herbs, flowers and vegetables, keep honey bees, serve hormone-free meats, use compostable paper products, and compost and recycle after every event.

Does sustainable catering mean the whole menu has to be vegan? No. A green menu can include meat, seafood and dairy. It's about how the food is sourced and how waste is handled. That said, we offer beautiful vegan dishes for couples and guests by request. Vegan can be delicious from the right kitchen.

Can I have a sustainable wedding at any venue? Yes. We cater at your home or venue of choice, as well as at our preferred Charlotte venues: The Morehead Inn, The Bechtler Museum, and The Scorpio/RSVP Southend. Our green practices come with us wherever we cook.

What happens to leftover food and waste after the reception? We compost food scraps and recycle our cooking oil. Our paper products are compostable, so far less ends up in a landfill. We also donate our leftovers to our friends at Innervision. We have served over a million people in need over the past five years.

Does a green menu work for a formal, elegant wedding? Absolutely. Fresh garden ingredients and hand-picked floral garnishes are at home at a black-tie dinner. Sustainability changes where the food comes from, not how elegant it feels. Some couples even make green, or a combination of greens, their wedding colors to help pull it all together.
