Our Story

Something Classic caters to exacting tastes. We attend to every detail, tangible and intangible: unparalleled service; quality of ingredients, crystal, and linens; and freshness of produce, some of which we harvest from our own garden.

The result is a meticulously curated experience, whether we honor royalty or celebrate a toddler’s birthday, or we host 15 to 15,000. We’ve done it all.

As a Mother Earth Group company, Something Classic is the brand of Mariposa and Coquette, of James Beard Award nominees and sustainability honors. Our seasoned professionals – chefs, event stylists, servers, and even a gardener and beekeeper – design memorable events that become an extension of your personal style or corporate brand.

Jill Marcus

Founder & President

Founder Jill Marcus is the perfect symbol of Something Classic: locally rooted, globally inspired. Marcus opened Something Classic in 1989, shortly after graduating from Davidson College. When she’s not working in Charlotte’s food scene, Marcus adds stamps to her well-inked passport and tastes her way around the world. She brings back souvenirs of these travels to her menus, infusing North Carolina flavors with international influences.

Marcus has opened some of Charlotte’s most beloved restaurants: Halcyon, the James Beard-nominated farm-to-table restaurant; Coquette, Charlotte’s favorite French restaurant & buvette; Mariposa, the world-to-table concept located in the Mint Museum Uptown; Fern, Charlotte’s revered vegan restaurant; and pop up shop, Hip Pies. All the while, Something Classic has remained Charlotte’s trusted catering company.

Mother Earth Group

Since 1989, Mother Earth Group has believed that eating well is more than what we serve our guests, but how we serve each other – and we fit our philosophy onto each plate. Our restaurants’ menus delight curious eaters with dishes that blend global influences with local traditions. And our ethos means we do everything with a nurturing spirit – treating our guests and each other with kindness and compassion. The result? Our restaurants are spaces of community, putting distinctive meals at the center of memorable experiences.
